Dogs with floppy ears and pointy ears
- big furry, slobbery pooches, or streamlined long-nosed varieties,
some groomed and polished to a fare-thee-well, others those scallywags
of no particular lineage, take their owners by the leashes. By brute
strength, sometimes combined with wiles and finesse, they bump and
pull their way to the front of the rapidly lengthening line. Their
obedient owners share in their eagerness.
What is this powerful magnet? Why is this ritual repeated every time
the steamships approach the docks in Vineyard Haven? What unseen force
draws them off the ferries with taut leashes, wagging tails, and sniffing
noses? Why is this parade of two- and four-legged creatures inexorably
marching on a south by east course as they disembark? It's no mystery.
The truth is, it is only about 200 human footsteps to the front door
of the famed Black Dog Bakery. The aroma is intoxicating
as freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, ginger snaps, pumpkin-cream
cheese muffins mingle with the steamy fragrance of still-baking scones
and fresh-brewed coffee. Three or four benches in front of the bakery
are already occupied by folks reading the morning papers and enjoying
their hot coffee and glazed donuts. Open the door with its tinkling
bell and join the crowd inside queuing up to the counter, hungrily
gazing at the tantalizing array of fresh-baked goods. The ham and
cheese croissants compete with the jewel-like berry jams of the nearby
Danish pastry. Blueberry crumb cake and cinnamon strudel, all carefully
cut into generous squares, irresistibly displayed on doily-lined platters
are deliberately placed at nose-level on the countertop.

The spacious
State Road Bakery & Cafe, plus a General Store, too |
This delight repeats itself at our 509 State Road Bakery &
Cafe. The bright and spacious cafe is perfect for a fresh
sit down lunch or breakfast sandwich and cup of coffee to start your
morning. Convenient place for the locals to meet, visitors to greet,
and all to enjoy. Home of our famous wedding cake creations!
Fresh breads, some still warm from the oven are stacked on the wooden
racks which line the walls of the kitchen. The stove with its burners
on low and the flames turned down slowly heat the pots of quahog chowder
for those early-risers who will soon be in need of an earlier-than-average
lunch.
There is no need to give up precious beach or bike time either. The
display cases are stacked with sandwiches - roast beef, turkey, ham
and cheese, tuna - all made of course with delicious Black Dog bread.
There are salads, too, for those whose appetites require lighter fare.
Grab a few sandwiches, and soup or salad, a couple of those world-renowned
cookies and you've got the perfect picnic lunch. Oh, and don't forget
a bag of doggie treats for Buster.
Springtime or anytime, biscotti and coffee, what a way to kick back
from the day. |
