Captain Robert Douglas, founder and owner of The Black Dog, also owns the The Black Dog Tall Ships. The Douglas family invites you aboard their vessels so you too may experience the magic of their wooden ships. Historically and traditionally accurate, both vessels possess the ability to bring people "back in time". You will be swept away into another age ~ the bygone era of wooden ships, shanty songs and pirates.

Alabama is a 90' gaff rigged schooner. It was painstakingly restored between 1995-1997 by the G.S. Maynard Shipbuilding Company and is widely regarded as the ultimate example of Yankee craftmanship and traditional shipbuilding. Designed by renowned naval architect Thomas McManus she was originally used as a pilot vessel. Alabama is fast and seaworthy. Refitted for the passenger trade, and equipped with twin diesels, Alabama schedules overnight cruises and makes an ideal daysailer as well. She is skippered by Captain Morgan Douglas, son of Shenandoah Captain Robert S. Douglas. The boat can carry up to 49 passengers on day sails and 27 passengers overnight in her two spacious cabins. She sails with a day crew of six including the cook.

The Shenandoah, launched in 1964, is a 152' square topsail schooner and is the only non auxilary power, square rigged vessel operating under the American flag. She was designed and built by Capt. Robert Douglas expressly for passenger service, and in her design every opportunity was taken to produce the swiftest sailing vessel of her size. Her hull form and rig, anchors, and all materials of construction adhere closely to the mid 19th century practices. The topmasts soar 94 feet above the water. There are 11 passenger cabins holding 30 berths and she sails with a crew of nine including the cook. Day sail capacity is 35.

Everybody needs to learn to ride a horse. No one should miss out on the great fun of getting to know these remarkable animals. Arrowhead Farm, the Douglas homestead is turned into a kid's horse riding day camp every summer. It's been that way for 18 years. Nestled in a quiet valley off Indian Hill Rd., 34 acres of a little bit of heaven, ponds, stream, forest and meadow are the fabric for a new adventure. Managed by Charlene Douglas and her extraordinary staff, this near legendary camp has become the focal point for many a child's Vineyard summer. After all with a bunch of ponies, horses and dogs happiness knows no bounds.
|
Children are introduced to all aspects of horsemanship: * mounted instruction * stable management * horse care * creative horse crafts * games on horseback
If the child has never ridden, the program's total immersion into horses will have the beginner ready to share with their parents an array of newly acquired skills. The camp experience offers children a foundation in riding. More than mere riders, we strive to create true horsemen.
