Tranportation Options to Martha's Vineyard

There are only two transport methods to get to the Island: by boat or plane. The most popular method and the only way to get a car over is to use the Steamship Authority Ferry, which runs large vehicle ferries between Woods Hole to ports in Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs.

Vehicles in summer require a reservation, which can be obtained online or by phone. There is a "stand-by" system for available space in all three ports, but we recommend the reservation.

Passengers do not need reservations. Fares for passengers are $6.00 for adults, $3.25 for Children 5-12 and Active Military Personnel. Children under 5 travel free. Bicycles, surfboards, and windsurfers are charged $3.00.

Vehicle parking is available in SSA lots for $8.00 per calendar day. Free shuttle buses run between their various lots in Woods Hole and Falmouth.

The Steamship website is here with schedules, directions, and more details.

Passenger Ferries
The SSA also operates a Fast Ferry service from New Bedford.

But there are several other passenger ferries operating from Falmouth and Hyannis and Orient Point, RI as well. Their web sites are linked below.

Hyannis Hy-Line Hyannis to Oak Bluffs

On-Island Transportation
There are several rental companies on Martha's Vineyard which have cars of all shapes and sizes, motorcycles, mopeds, and bicycles. You can also rent baby carriages, linens, boats, fishing charters, and many other useful goods. There are many taxi companies and an island-wide bus system that takes passengers to and from the three major towns, as well as seasonal trolley/bus service to all the island. Tours are conducted by the bus and taxi companies in each town.

By Air
Air transportation options include regular service and chartered service to and from the island from Martha's Vineyard Airport and the Katama Airfield.

We encourage you to use the internet to search for the tranport which will suit your needs.
